Lexington’s Week Without Driving

September 29 – October 5

Did you know that about a third of Lexington residents cannot or do not drive, due to age, income, ability, or other factors? All members of our community should be able to get around with ease and dignity, no matter how they’re getting around, but Lexington is a very car dependent city. Week Without Driving invites community members who drive regularly, especially elected officials and other decision makers, to try and go a full week without driving in order to experience firsthand the barriers and challenges that nondrivers in our community face daily. Week Without Driving also invites people to experience or imagine the connection, interaction, and joyful movement that can come when getting around without a car is easy due to good infrastructure and policy.

Participating in Week Without Driving is easy! You can:

  • Replace car trips with other options, like walking, biking, or taking the bus.

  • If other options don’t exist or aren’t accessible for you, talk to your neighbors and elected officials about it.

  • Imagine the ways Lexington could change to make getting around without a car easier.

  • Participate in the fun events happening during the week!

Week Without Driving started in Washington State in 2021 with Anna Zivarts, Director of Disability Mobility Initiative, at Rights Washington. In 2023, America Walks helped take it national. In 2024, over 520 groups in all 50 states and D.C participated–including here in Lexington! Learn more about the national movement.
